The decision about where to invest your super is an important
one and one that could effect the end result when it's time to
retire. To help you make your choice easier, here are some things
that we think are important to consider.
A few things to remember
- Your investment timeframe. This is how long
you intend to keep your money invested in super, for instance if
your 30 and plan to retire when your 60 then your investment time
frame is 30 years.
- How much you need to save to retire
comfortably. This amount will vary depending on the type
of lifestyle you'd like to have in retirement.
- How much risk you prefer to take. Risk is
generally related to returns you earn on your super and history
tells us that investments like shares are more volatile in the
shorter term but produce higher returns in the long term. Whereas
investing in bonds and cash are generally less volatile in their
performance in the short term but also tend to produce lower long
term returns. When choosing an investment option, consider adopting
a level of investment risk that is consistent with your investment
timeframe. A simple way to possibly reduce risk is by
spreading your super across a number of different investment
options. By doing this your overall performance is less dependent
on the performance of any single investment option such as
shares.
Once you have a clearer idea on these matters you can begin to
look at choosing an investment option that best suits your
needs.
