Who can make a super choice?

Who can make choice?

Unless one of the following applies to you, you can choose your own super fund:

  • You’re employed under a certified industrial agreement or an Australian Workplace Agreement (AWA) that specifies the super fund/s into which your employer must pay your super.
  • You’re covered by a State award or industrial agreement that specifies the super fund into which your employer must pay your super*.
  • You’re a member of a defined benefit fund and certain other conditions are satisfied (eg, the fund is significantly in surplus). Defined benefit funds are not very common – your fund will be able to tell you if you are a member of this type of fund.
  • You’re a member of certain public offer funds.
* From the 1st of July 2006, if you work for a company and your superannuation contributions are paid under a state award you may be free to choose your own fund. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
