How to cancel a direct debit


Direct debits can be a handy way to make sure you don’t forget to pay your bills. But sometimes they can be an inconvenience if you ever need to cancel the payment.

Luckily, there are a few easy ways to cancel your direct debit – just make sure you contact the seller or service provider before ending your payments. You don’t want to be found to be in breach of your contract.

Contact the seller or service provider

It’s important that you inform the seller or service provider that you intend to cancel your payments. You can then organise for payments to be made another way, or simply tell them you wish to cancel the service they have been providing. Just make sure you are not contractually obligated to keep making payments to them, or you could find yourself in breach of contract.

Contact your bank

You will need to contact your bank and advise them that you no longer authorise these payments. It’s a good idea to let them know your request in writing, so that you have a record of it. Note this step only applies if the direct debit is being charged directly to your account. If the payments are coming from a credit or debit card, the process will be different. You should check the instructions for card payments below.

Check for any future debits

You have every right to cancel a direct debit, and your bank must follow your instructions when you do. If, after advising your bank that you want to cancel your direct debit, any subsequent payments are taken, you should be able to contact your bank to ask for a reimbursement.

Note – the process is different if it’s a card payment

Any automatic payments that are deducted from your debit or credit card are not your bank’s responsibility. If you wish to cancel a recurring payment on your debit or credit card, you will have to contact the seller or service provider instead.
