Investing in yourself
It’s easy to throw ourselves into work and feel as though we have no time for ourselves. For hospitality workers, shifts tend to be long and the hours odd. It’s much harder to find time between working and sleeping to do something you enjoy.
Life is short, and our free time is just as important as our time at work – perhaps even more so. So next time you have a free hour or a day off, why not spend it looking after yourself? We’ve listed four easy ways to invest your spare time in yourself and your wellbeing.
Create something new!
Creative pursuits can be a really valuable thing to invest your time in. You don’t have to create something that’s going to win awards or solve the world’s problems. Whether it’s art, cooking, writing or construction, find an area you could spend some time creating something new. The feeling of accomplishment when you finish something you made with your own hands can be incredibly rewarding.
Learn new skills
We all know that education can be a really worthwhile pursuit. Expanding our knowledge doesn’t have to mean going to university or even long-form education, necessarily. Depending on what you’re interested in, you can generally learn new skills in all kinds of areas through short courses and one-day workshops. You could consider drawing, painting, cooking – even IT, photography and social media. If there’s something you’re interested in learning more about, using your spare time to pursue it would absolutely be worthwhile. You could even spend some time learning some new financial skills! Intrust Super offers free education modules to members, to help you learn more about super and your finances and expand your financial knowledge or skills.
Look after your health
It can be hard to prioritise your health, so looking after yourself is a really beneficial way to invest your time. Making sure you have enough sleep, eating well, exercising – these are all things that often get neglected when we feel we have limited time. So if you do find yourself with a spare hour or two, you should consider going for a walk or cooking a healthy meal for lunch. You could even just choose to go to bed early to get a good night sleep.
If you do find yourself unable to work due to illness or injury, you should check if you’re covered by Intrust Super’s insurance offering. Eligible members can be covered by PayGuard income protection and life and total and permanent disability insurance. Learn more here or find out how to make a claim.
Assess your finances
Our finances are something most of us don’t spend a lot of time on, especially if it’s something we feel anxious about. Spending some spare time on reviewing your finances and thinking about some financial goals can be very beneficial. Log in to your bank account and assess your incoming funds and outgoing expenses. See if there are any areas you could make some savings. You could even do the same for your super balance. Log in to MemberAccess to check your balance and ensure your contributions are being processed correctly.
Invest in yourself and yield returns in the future
Make a list of areas you think you might like to spend more time on. Even if it’s not one of the suggestions here, you can prioritise exactly what you’d like to focus on. With that goal in mind, spend a few minutes each week considering how much time you have invested wisely. You’ll be amazed by how much more energised and motivated it can make you feel!
