Government to drop plans for Age Pension changes
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced the Government will scrap plans to raise the pension age to 70.
The plan to lift the pension age was initially announced in the 2014 Federal Budget, but the Senate has never been able to agree on formalising the policy. Until now, the Government had always kept the proposal on the table.
Mr Morrison announced the move on breakfast television this week, saying he did not think the measure was needed anymore.
“I was going to say this next week, but I may as well say it here, I have already consulted my colleagues on that and next week Cabinet will be ratifying a decision to reverse taking the retirement age to 70,” he said.
The qualifying age to receive the Age Pension will remain at 67.
